Gruppo L10N offer Italy's first Post-Graduate Localisation Course

The first post-graduate course on localisation in Italy is about to start.

The course is built around practice-oriented teaching. The majority of the learning activities will be carried out by working on a real localisation project. The course will include seminars, lectures and workshops given by guest speakers.

The course program will last 300 hours (two semesters) and provide all participants with the skills needed to work in the software localisation industry. Students will receive a thorough theoretical and practical grounding in computing, with special reference to the localisation process.

Applications are now open. The basic requirements for enrolment are a degree in modern languages, translation or IT. An ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is a plus. Gruppo L10N welcomes leading industry players to sponsor the course either by financing a scholarship for the value of the course fee or hosting a student for a paid six-month training period. Candidate sponsors will be invited to come through a comprehensive sponsorship agreement.

Transmission 1.0 localises Photoshop files

Transmissions LLC, a provider of graphic localisation tools and custom business software solutions, has released Transmission 1.0 for Windows XP and Windows 2000. Transmission 1.0 is a solution for managing the translation and localisation of text intensive Adobe Photoshop files.

Designed in partnership with TRADOS Incorporated, it is designed to seamlessly integrate with Adobe Photoshop and TRADOS. Transmission 1.0 automatically converts Photoshop files into TRADOS readable XML-based files (TTX files). It lets users view translatable text in a graphical context as an aid for translation using TRADOS, and it substitutes fonts to accommodate alphabets not supported by the original text's font. It then automatically updates Photoshop files with translations and any font substitutions and saves translated Photoshop files in a Web-ready format.

Transmission 1.0 is also available in a corporate edition that is bundled with additional functionality aimed at larger organizations with either very large or very many graphics translation and localisation projects.

Babel Media adds on-line testing service

Babel Media has launched an on-line beta testing service, Planet Testing, in response to the emerging on-line games sector. The service will fully launch during the first quarter of 2004, but Babel is already testing two on-line PC titles with one top five publisher.

According to a recent report by DFC Intelligence, the number of on-line global gamers will treble to 40 million by 2006. Yet publishers face challenges in that on-line games need extensive compatibility testing across all ISPs, hardware and territories. Babel's Planet Testing means publishers can outsource this expensive aspect of their on-line games offering. The company's volunteer teams in Europe, the United States and Asia-Pacific, combined with its team of experienced testers in the United Kingdom and India, can scale testing to provide a "real world" test scenario before a title is released. Babel is also considering solutions to provide an effective test compatibility scenario.
