Microsoft goes Irish  

The IRISH TIMES newspaper reported on Friday, June 11, in their Business Supplement that Microsoft, in partnership with Foras na Gaeilge, the University of Ulster, the University of Limerick and NUI Maynooth is developing its software packages Windows XP and Office 2003 in Irish. 

The translated versions of the software will be available within the next 12 months at no cost by simply downloading a language interface pack from the internet. The Localisation Research Centre (LRC) is Microsoft's partner in the University of Limerick.

IWIPS 2004: Culture, Trust and Design Innovation

The annual International Workshop on the Internationalization of Products and Services, IWIPS 2004, will be held in Vancouver, Canada, 8 -10 July 2004. Situated on the Pacific coast, the location provides a central meeting place for Asia, Europe, and the North American continent. IWIPS is a unique venue at which practitioners, academics and others gain access to cutting edge information regarding globalisation, localisation, and internationalisation issues. This year's conference is focused on culture and design, and how trust is developed in online environments.

IWIPS 2004 will feature the same varieties of presentations, breakout sessions, and social events that have proven effective in previous years for both international networking and information exchange.

Localization Summer School in Austin, Texas

Austin Community College (ACC) will host the second Localization Summer School in Austin June 16-18, 2004.

The summer school is a complement to a leading training program for localization in the Austin Community College in Austin, Texas. Dr. Tim Altanero has built a global network of instructors and introduced the first localization certificate program in Texas. McElroy Translation Company supports the ACC Localization Certificate Program through participating in class instruction and encourages people to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about global communication. 

Seminar Topics include the following:

  1. Translation memory – Understanding this topic is essential for most localization projects.

  2. Technology tool – Tool that enables resizing for text expansion or special character display.

  3. Sales process – Identify stakeholders and learn the internal and external sales process.

  4. Localized product testing – Learn the basics from a pro—process, structure, who should be involved, resource allocation and technology requirements.

  5. Internationalization basics – Technically prepare software or websites for localization. 

GALA Seminar on the expansion of the European Union

The Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) is hosting a one-day seminar to discuss critical issues related to the expansion of the European Union. The seminar, entitled "The Europe of 25: New Challenges in the European Expansion", will be held in Brussels on 28 June 2004. Join key industry experts to consider the impact of the expansion on economic, legal, socioeconomic, marketing, linguistic and financial fronts.  Topics include:  marketing to diverse communities, conducting business within new regulations and understanding the market language needs of new member states. 26th Internationalization and Unicode Conference

The 26th Internationalization and Unicode Conference, entitled: Internationalization and Web Services, will be held in San Jose, California, USA from September 8-10, 2004. This is the premier technical conference for software and Web internationalization and a great source for the latest information on standards, best practices, development tools and advances in the globalization of software and the Internet.

The Internationalization & Unicode Conference features a number of presentation formats including tutorials, workshops, lectures, and panel discussions to support different learning styles.

RWS Group becomes ENLASO Corporation

Alchemy appoints new Director, EMEA Business Solutions

Alchemy Software Development, the market leader in visual localization solutions, has recently announced the appointment of Joseph P. Deignan as Director, EMEA Business Solutions. In this role he spearheads all Sales and Marketing activities in EMEA.

Joseph previously directed solution selling activities with BT and Yell in the UK and most recently Moravia IT in Czech Republic.

TRADOS 2004 roadshow to visit more than 30 European cities

TRADOS, Inc., a globalisation solutions company, is launching its TRADOS 2004 roadshow "GET CONNECTED - Your Roadmap to Global Success" across Europe. Sponsored by partners Documentum and Langenscheidt, the roadshow helps educate organisations on the new innovations in localisation that can accelerate their global business and success. Joining the roadshow will be local TRADOS partners such as Moravia Worldwide, PROMT, Julianus, Albisa, Celer Pawlowsky, Iolar, ORCO and others with experience specific to the particular localisation and IT markets of the region.

Running from June through December 2004, the roadshow will stop in 23 European nations including Germany, United Kingdom, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands as well as countries from the recently extended European Union such as Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
