LRC at Localisation Summit, New Delhi
LRC Director Reinhard Schäler was invited to deliver the keynote address on the opening day of India’s first Localisation Summit (08-10 Dec 2004). The conference was organised by the Manufacturers’ Association for Information Technology (MAIT) and supported by the Indian Government, Oracle, RedHat and Microsoft. While in New Delhi, Reinhard was invited to visit the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Noida, on the outskirts of New Delhi. One of the projects of this centre is The Mobile Digital Library, which allows people in rural communities to access the internet and, specifically, a vast selection of books (more than one million) in a variety of Indian languages. The mobile library is based in four-wheel-drive jeeps, which are equipped with satellite dishes and receivers, as well as with complete book-printing and binding facilities.
