LRC in Portugal

Technology for Translation Teachers was the title of a one-week intensive training seminar — organised by the Consortium for Training Translation Teachers (CTTT), in cooperation with the Intercultural Studies Group and the Institute of Arts and Humanities at the Universidade do Minho in Braga, Portugal — which took place 27 June – 1 July 2005. The seminar was based on the models used in Tarragona in 2001, Vicenza in 2002, Granada in 2003 and Tarragona in 2004, and designed to bring together both professional translators and translation teachers, as well as to facilitate exchanges between those groups. The seminar leaders were Bert Esselink (consultant with Lionbridge Technologies Inc., Amsterdam), Belinda Maia (Associate Professor at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto), Minako O'Hagan (lecturer at Dublin City University), and Reinhard Schäler (director, LRC).

IEEE PCS Conference in Limerick

The IEEE Professional Communication Society hosted its International Professional Communication Conference 2005 at the University of Limerick from 10 - 13 July

The theme of this year’s International professional Communication Conference was ceangail (which is Irish for making connections). With approximately 130 papers submitted from professionals from over 25 countries, this was a truly international conference. While the majority of presenters were from technical communications-related fields, there were also a number of localisation﷓related presentations and workshops; evidence of the close ties between the technical communications and localisation industries.

The keynote address delivered by Reinhard Schäler (of the LRC and University of Limerick) and entitled Communication as a Key to Global Business set the tone for what was to follow over the next three days. Reinhard articulated how localisation must be the key enabler for making connections in the digital world — “language is the most important medium of communication, even in the digital world”.
