Funding by Microsoft has become available to the LRC for a suitable candidate to complete an MSc by Research during the 2008/2009 academic year at the University of Limerick. Research will be carried out on one of the three projects described below.

#1: Localisation file formats, tools compatibility, format conversion

Comparison of standard file formats used for localisation like TMX and XLIFF, and Microsoft file formats |

Assessment of how well recycling and translation tools like SDL Trados, Alchemy, and Microsoft localisation tools, support such formats |

Conversion between different localisation file formats, preservation of formatting and other information, meta-data for recycling, translation and validation |
Project consists of surveying file formats and tools, assessing extent of format support in different localisation tools, and investigation of extent of conversion possible between different formats. It includes review and comparison of Microsoft file formats and tools with formats and tools used in localisation industry.
#2: Recycling, MT, & translation workflow automation; tool and process integration

How can recycling and machine translation be integrated in a production workflow, to optimize translation productivity? |

What forms of integration are possible with current tools and technologies, what constraints and limitations exist? |

What improvements are desirable, in tools, technologies, file formats, processes |

What are the options for integrating and presenting recycling and machine translation input to the translator? |
Project consists of investigation of existing workflow solutions and integration of stand-alone tools, how machine translation and recycling fits in, and how standard file formats can be used. Impact of upstream work, authoring guidelines/support, should be considered.

What does it mean for an editor or workflow to be ‘web-based’, does it mean it’s got a lesser feature-set than a ‘rich client’ standalone editor, or is this distinction no longer relevant? |

Are web-based solutions/workflows generally monolithic or can they be modular (combination of tools from different providers)? |

Can existing ‘stand-alone’ client editors and workflow solutions be ‘web-enabled’, integrated |

Does ‘crowd-sourcing’, a la Facebook localisation, and wiki-editing, have a role in scalable localisation workflows? |
This project is about investigating web-based localisation solutions and options, how the web can help with tools deployment, and workflow management, and to what extent existing tools solutions can be integrated in ‘in the cloud’ solutions. Some tools integration, workflow prototyping based on integrating existing components is also possible.
