The
pre-conference day will provide delegates with an opportunity to
discuss important issues in a smaller, more informal workshop
setting. The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP) will
introduce its Certified Localisation Professional (CLP) programme,
the LRC will discuss its localisation research efforts, the
Localisation Teaching, Training and Research Network (LttN) will
hold its annual meeting and a number of stakeholders will discuss

Employing
open-source software can cut costs, dispel security concerns and
also prevent companies from becoming too dependent on a foreign
supplier. There is however another huge benefit: because it can be
freely customised and tailored to suit specific needs, open-source
software is also easier to localise for use in a particular language
or culture. This year’s LRC conference will explore the technical
challenges, commercial realities and the social impact of open
source localisation paired with practical case studies.

Keynote
- Open
Source: the new paradigm for international digital content
development?
Paul Gampe, Director of Engineering,
RedHat Asia Pacific
This keynote will examine
current developments in international digital content
development, especially in relation to open source. How has
the open source movement been able to achieve such a depth and
breadth of language coverage in such a short period of time?
What do the large multinational digital content providers have
to learn from the success, and how can the open source
movement leverage the existing developments of the proprietary
localisation industry to take it to the next step?

Session
1: Technical
challenges
& Standards
How
can open source content be localised? Which tools and
technologies are available? Can industry-standard localisation
environments and processes easily be applied to open source
localisation projects? Are international standard
organisations providing sufficient support for open source
localisation projects? – Tools developers and experts in
open source localisation provide answers.

2: Commercial Realities
for Publishers
Should
low cost of acquisition be the only factor when choosing open
source in an international computing environment? Has the lack
of standardisation and controlled support in open source
computing an impact its commercial viability? – Commercial
companies active in developing open source solutions in an
international environment examine these questions.

3: Success
stories
When
is open source the ideal solution for collaboration in a
global computing environment? Are certain applications better
suited than others for open source? – Case studies will
offer an insight into success stories – and failures – of
open source computing around the world.
