A line of Thom McAnn sandals caused a
riot in Bangladesh. The melee resulted in the death of one person, while
over fifty others were wounded. Fundamentalist Muslims demonstrated
because the logo on the sandals resembled the Arabic characters for Allah
or “God” in Arabic. The logo was intended to be a stylish drawing of
three bells, but as a result of the trouble it caused, the government
banned the sale of the sandals.
